Youville Moms Embrace Self-Care

Young moms pose with guest presenters at the Youville Centre in Ottawa

Our young moms are so busy caring for their children and completing their education that sometimes it can be difficult for them to make time for taking care of themselves. This was the motivation behind our most recent Lunch and Learn on the topic of Self-Care, presented by Mary Gallagher and Michelle Torunski on April 11.

Youville students participated in a conversation about burn out, including the causes, how to recognize the signs and symptoms, and understanding that burn out may look differently for different people. The topic of self-care was discussed as a strategy for valuing yourself and maintaining positive mental health. The students also brainstormed ideas for self-care activities and what they felt they would need in a self-care tool-kit.

The students were invited to create self-care tool-kits for themselves, using toiletry bags and a wide variety of bath and body products. We would like to acknowledge the generosity of Gavin (Author of blog Frugalitiness: The Art of Being Frugal) and the Purple Urchin, who provided these items as a treat for our students. Our moms thoroughly enjoyed this activity and will be able to use the kits for self-care at home! Thank you!

We also thought we would tell you more about why we are having this event in the first place! We are raising funds so that more of our young moms here at Youville Centre (ages 14 to 21) can access mental health and addiction counselling, and so their children (ages 1 month to 3 years) can access parent-child attachment counselling and continue to benefit from our infant mental health programs.

Your support of Youville Centre by attending our Fashion FUNRaiser can make an immediate difference in the lives of our young mothers and their children.

By supporting Youville, you are supporting young moms like Sarah:

Strathcona Park is a Beautiful Setting for YouRide

One of the great features of the YouRide Event is its location. Strathcona Park is sandwiched between the Rideau River and Range Road. Here it commands a magnificent position on the river at the eastern end of Sandy Hill and just a short distance from the Youville Centre itself.

Strathcona park was formerly the site of the Dominion Rifle Range – hence the name Range Road. Just before the beginning of the twentieth century, this area was purchased for the newly formed Ottawa Golf Club. The land there was sufficient for a nine hole course. Later, to accommodate a larger course, the Club moved, first to a site on the Chelsea Road and then to its present location on the Aylmer Road opposite the Champlain Bridge.

In the intervening years, Strathcona Park has matured into a beautiful place for visitors to stroll or sit while enjoying the beauty of its wonderful setting.

Strathcona Fountain

And the park and the surrounding streets are loaded with history as well. For example, the fountain located at the north-west corner of Strathcona Park was brought here from England by Donald Smith, Baron Strathcona, and given to the city in 1909. For many years the fountain sat empty, unused and decaying. However, when the park was upgraded in the 1990s, the fountain was restored to working order. Because it is a real fountain – and not one of those nasty broken pipe imitations that pass for fountains elsewhere in the city – it adds life and movement to this section of the park.
