Our recent Youville Art Gallery Event showcased the talents of the students who chose to study Art in the summer school program.

All of the art was quite original and well-crafted and some of the most striking pieces were the sketches of the children here at Youville Centre. Congratulations to all of the art students! May you continue to use your creative talents in the future.

Thanks to the mighty watering skills of our wonderful Youville children, our organic vegetable gardens are growing nicely! The garden beds are the result of a program here at Youville Centre called Planet Youville, where our students and their children are participating in a recycling program and an organic garden project. Planet Youville is a result of the generosity of the Nuclear Waste Management Organization and the assistance of Sandy Hill community members and the Canadian Organic Growers‘ project, “Growing Up Organic“.

With their own two hands, the children and their mothers alike are learning how local, sustainable agriculture can have a positive impact on their health and their community. A strong sense of self-sufficiency and leadership comes from getting your hands dirty in a garden, as I’m sure anyone with a green thumb would agree. Our gardens even have a unique pattern, as the little ones themselves sowed the seeds! Everyone is looking forward to the bounty of fresh vegetables and herbs that these gardens will produce over the summer while our students achieve their Phys Ed. and Art credits.

ON SUNDAY, MAY 16TH, OUR FIRST-EVER ‘YOU RIDE’ TOOK PLACE. IT WAS A GREAT FAMILY EVENT.

“You Ride, 2010″ was a pledge-based 5k, 10k and 20k family bike ride fund raising event for the Youville Centre that featured lunch, entertainment and prizes. It was a wonderful opportunity for families to participate in a fun-filled activity that helped raise much needed funds for Youville’s community work.

Strathcona park was formerly the site of the Dominion Rifle Range – hence the name Range Road. Just before the beginning of the twentieth century, this area was purchased for the newly formed Ottawa Golf Club. The land there was sufficient for a nine hole course. Later, to accommodate a larger course, the Club moved, first to a site on the Chelsea Road and then to its present location on the Aylmer Road opposite the Champlain Bridge.

In the intervening years, Strathcona Park has matured into a beautiful place for visitors to stroll or sit while enjoying the beauty of its wonderful setting.

And the park and the surrounding streets are loaded with history as well. For example, the fountain located at the north-west corner of Strathcona Park was brought here from England by Donald Smith, Baron Strathcona, and given to the city in 1909. For many years the fountain sat empty, unused and decaying. However, when the park was upgraded in the 1990s, the fountain was restored to working order. Because it is a real fountain – and not one of those nasty broken pipe imitations that pass for fountains elsewhere in the city – it adds life and movement to this section of the park.

Water and power bars will be available to participants and lunch will be served upon your return to Strathcona Park.

Helmets are a must and for those who don’t bring one, there will be helmets available at a discounted price.
